Around noon on Sept 15, 2013 Essex Junction Fire was toned out to the Laundromat in the Pearl Street Shopping Plaza for smoke filling the building, and power going out. When 8U61 arrived on Scene with C1 and C2 they found a light haze throughout the laundromat. C2 requested a second tone for EJFD and mutual aid tones for Essex Town Fire. Engine 5 arrived on scene and was assigned investigation. Engine 5's crew went into the Laundromat and tried to gain access into the back of the shop through a door. Unable to force the door due to a large metal bar used to keep the door closed the crew went through the wall, finding the back room filled with heavy smoke. Reporting heavy smoke to Command, the crew removed the bar to the door and pushed into the zero visibility smoke. Command sent Ladder 3 to the rear of the building. Ladder 3 discovered smoke being pushed from multiple vents and wire openings in the building. Unable to through the Ladder due to power lines, crews used ground ladders to ladder the roof of the shopping plaza. Engine 5's crew by this point found the fire spreading along the back wall, they contained the fire with an Extinguisher. They then opened the rear exit to the building and retrieved a 1 3/4 inch line off from Ladder 3 to continue suppression. Ladders 3's crew entered the building to pull ceiling while other members went to the roof in case they needed to vent the roof. Within minutes the fire was under control. Essex Town provided mutual aid to the fire and Engine 21 stood by a hydrant. Crews cleared the scene within an hour and a half of the original dispatch.
