Ladder Truck Responds Mutual Aid to Colchester (St Michael's College)
Monday, February 17th, 2014

In the early morning hours on Monday, February 17th, 2014, the Essex Junction Fire Department was requested just before 3:45am to respond mutual aid to a townhouse fire on Saint Michael's Campus. Upon arrival, Colchester crews had a large volume of fire showing from the Alpha and Charlie side. Winooski and Malletts Bay responded automatic mutual aid. Crews from CCFVC, St Mikes Battalion, made a push on the fire but where stopped when they were unable to advance into the second floor due to the stairs giving way. The Heavy fire conditions resulted in floor collapse on the Alpha side of the structure. Crews needed to open up the walls between the adjoining townhouses to be able to get to the fire. Crews also used the Tower from Winooski to use the master streams to knock down the bulk of the fire. About 15 minutes in Colchester requested Essex Junction to the scene.

Ladder 3 responded with 5 personnel and arrived to find the bulk of the fire knocked down. Crews went to work opening up the soffits and looking for extension into the attic Crews where then split up with one crew going to Division two on the Bravo side to pull ceilings and opening up walls assisting the Mallets Bay Crew with final extinguishment and overhaul efforts. The other Crew worked from the exterior taking out the brick wall to get fire which had spread between the brick and the interior walls. Crews Worked until 7:00 in the morning, as clean up took a lot of effort, as many hoses including the supply lines had frozen solid.

The Red Cross responded to help the displaced students and supplied food and hot coffee to the crews on scene.
