At 19:10 hrs on January 11th, the Essex Junction Fire Department was requested to respond to 61 Pearl Street in Essex Junction for an elevator emergency (usually meaning the elevator has stalled and occupants are stuck in the elevator unable to get out). Utility 61 and Engine 5 responded with a total of 8 personnel and arrived to find an elevator stalled out on the basement (parking garage) level of the building. Finding no elevator keys to use and the elevator not responding to attempted resets, the crews went to work developing a plan to free the 4 occupants of the elevator car. It was determined entry would be best gained through the elevator door itself. It took crews over an hour utilizing sawzalls, halligan , air chisel and a Hurst "combi" tool to free the occupants, who were able to escape the incident shaken, but unharmed. All Junction crews were clear form the scene shortly before 21:00 hrs.
