On the morning of July 2, the Essex Junction Fire Department, Essex Fire Department and Essex Rescue were dispatched to respond to KFC on Pearl Street in Essex Junction for a vehicle that crashed into the gas line for the building.
Engine 5 and Ladder 3 responded, arriving to find a vehicle that had struck the building and severed the gas line. Personnel encountered a major gas leak which was leaking directly next to the building.
EJFD personnel worked with EFD personnel to stretch multiple hose lines to begin dispersing the gas leak. Essex Rescue transported the driver of the vehicle while a second ambulance stood by on the scene. Saint Michael's Fire provided an engine for station coverage for the duration of the incident.
Vermont Gas and Green Mountain Power responded to the scene to secure both the gas and power. Once these were secure, Firefighters worked to meter the building and immediate area to determine if the levels of gas were dangerous.
After approximately two hours on scene, EJFD and EFD personnel picked up equipment and departed the scene.
