History of Painesville Hose Company
Tue. Jun 5th 2018

This Wednesday, we visit the name of our second due engine, Engine 21 or; "Painesville Hose Company."

Engine 21 is our 1997 E-One pumper that responds as the second engine out of EJFD and also responds as our mutual aid engine to surrounding communities. 21 holds 750 gallons of water and has a 1250 GPM pump. Engine 21 will soon be retiring as we anxiously await the arrival of our new engine from Pierce! 21 has served us well over the years, pumping more fires than most members can remember.

The title, "Painesville Hose Company" comes from yet another old name for Essex Junction. In the mid 1800s, there were several active rail lines converging in the village including the Burlington to Northfield line, which was constructed by then Governor Charles Paine. Once a rail station for passengers was built, the area surrounding it became known as Painesville. Oddly enough, the conductors of trains would still announce the arrival into Essex Junction, and not Painesville as it was known at the time.

Check back next week when we visit the history behind our ladder company!
