Passing of Active Member Chuck Barry Sr.

It is with profound sadness that the Essex Junction Fire Department announces the passing of active member, Charles "Chuck" Barry.

Chuck has actively served the Essex Junction Fire Department for the past 34 years. In 1985, while working for IBM, Chuck joined the Essex Junction Fire Department. In his time with the department we estimate that Chuck ran over 7k calls, since 2004 he has run approximately 3,500 calls. The department was one with his family, with both his son and wife serving along side him during his time with us.

Over the last few years Chuck has served as both Fire Police and department administrator. He worked Monday through Friday, every morning, coordinating apparatus maintenance, scheduling appointments, and representing the department at meetings. He also facilitated and helped out with fire prevention activities both in the station and throughout the community.

You can't talk about Chuck without discussing his role to our community. He took his role as a community member to heart, and though Essex Junction was not the only place he lived during his life, Essex Junction was his home. Through his role on the department he became the liaison between the department and EJRP, Memorial Day Parade and everything to do with the Champlain Valley Exposition. In more than one way he bacame the face of the department. At times community members thought he was the Chief. Whether he was leading a parade, doing traffic for a fun run, seconding a motion during the annual Village meeting or enjoying the block party, Chuck was always around.

During the past 34 years Chuck has received many awards and recognitions. In fact, he was actually the first recipient of the department's Rookie of the Year award! He received Member of the Year award TWICE!

Chuck will be missed by everyone here at the EJFD and everyone whose life he has touched! Our thoughts are with his Wife Maddie and their family.
