2019 Year in Review
Thu. Jan 2nd 2020

As we welcome the new year, we wanted to take a moment to review 2019 at the Essex Junction Fire Department. What a year it was!

In 2019 the Essex Junction Fire Department responded to 491 emergency calls for service. Of these, 93 calls were for EMS First Response. Fire incidents were fire alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, elevator alarms, motor vehicle crashes with injuries, motor vehicle crashes with fluid clean up, lift assists to Essex Rescue and many more. Here is a look back at the more significant incidents that the EJFD responded to in 2019:

  • Structure fire on Woods End Drive
  • Second alarm structure fire on East Lakeshore Drive in Colchester
  • Dumpster fire on Kellogg Road
  • Chimney fire on Weed Road
  • Fire in a closet at the Fair Grounds on Pearl Street
  • Second alarm structure fire at Eagle Crest Senior Housing in Williston
  • Structure fire on Parizo Drive
  • Garage fire on Pioneer Street
  • Vehicle vs dump truck with entrapment on Jericho Road at Lilac Lane
  • Attic fire on Athens Drive
  • Garage fire on Marshal Avenue in Williston
  • Farm equipment fire on South Street
  • Vehicle fire on David Drive
  • Structure fire on South Street
  • Brush fire on Educational Drive
  • Vehicle into Ray's Seafood
  • Vehicle on a person on Pearl Street
  • Vehicle into a building on Pearl Street
  • Vehicle fire on Pearl Street
  • Vehicle into a house on West Street
  • Vehicle into a house on Colchester Road
  • Vehicle on fire at Essex High School
  • Chimney fire on South Road in Williston

The EJFD provided mutual aid multiple times during 2019 including the following:

  • 3 incidents at the Burlington International Airport
  • 2 incidents in the Town of Colchester
  • 1 incident in the City of Winooski
  • 16 incidents in the Town of Williston

In 2019 the EJFD also said good bye to a long time member who passed away following an illness. Chuck Barry was an extremely active member of the EJFD, right up until the days before his passing. Chuck was most recently a Fire Police member, but had previously served as a firefighter. Chuck's passing left a void in our hearts and our organization. But, we carry on and continue to provide the best service possible in honor of Chuck, as that is what he would have wanted us to do.

2019 also saw the retirement of Safety Officer and long time member Ray Weed. Ray is a life member of EJFD and will surely continue to be seen around the firehouse, even after over 40 years of service.

We also had several active and long time members retire from the department, as well as welcomed several new members to the department.

EJFD also participated in Operation Fire Cuffs as well as hosting our annual open house/santa day which was a success as always. EJFD also participated in the Williston Chowder Challenge as we have for several years. Members also attended the annual block party here in the village as well as participated in the Memorial Day parade. We worked with Essex Fire, Essex Police and Essex Rescue at the mock crash demonstration at Essex High School.

We retired 8 Utility 61 and placed in service 8 Car 9, which has proved to be a very useful piece of apparatus.

In 2019, EJFD was awarded a grant for nearly $150,000.00 for the replacement of our aging SCBAs. The order has been placed for this equipment with anticipated January delivery.

Members attended thousands of hours of training, including many hours spent at the donated training house on Pearl Street. We were extremely grateful for this opportunity as donated properties for us to train in can be rare. We were also thankful for the invitation to participate in live burn training with Williston Fire.

2019 was a very busy year for the EJFD and we look forward to what 2020 has to offer. We will continue to respond whenever anyone in the community needs our services. We strive to provide the most professional services possible, all while maintaining our "paid on-call" status (the EJFD and EFD do not have any full-time personnel). We also want to take a moment to thank our mutual aid partners at Essex Rescue, Inc.Essex Police DepartmentEssex Fire DepartmentWilliston Fire DepartmentColchester Center Volunteer Fire Fighters' Association Inc. Happy new year to everyone and we hope it is a good one!
