On January 26th, at 1856, Essex Junction Fire, Essex Fire, and Essex Rescue were dispatched for a reported kitchen fire at 100 South Street.

When Essex Rescue arrived on the scene, they reported smoke coming from the residence. Moments later, Essex Town Fire Assistant Chief Trenholm, who lives in the neighborhood near the residence, arrived on the scene and reported visible fire from the rear of the house.

While responding on Engine 7, Lt Leclair requested a 2nd alarm, which brought resources from Williston Fire, Air Guard Fire, St Michaels, and Winooski. Engine 7 then arrived on the scene and pulled an attack line. The crew attacked from the garage and found a kitchen fire that had flashed over, with a large fire inside the door. Crews quickly extinguished the fire, but the fire had a large overhaul process due to the amount of fire and extension into the walls and attic. Our crews, along with our mutual aid departments, rotated through assisting with the salvage and Overhaul of the fire. Crews were on the scene for just over two and a half hours.

Working smoke detectors alerted the homeowner to the fire. The fire was determined to be unintentional and had been caused by a kitchen appliance failure. Though the fire was contained in the kitchen, the smoke damage across the home was extensive, and the resident was displaced.

This was the third fire the department had responded to this week.
